A Celebration of Independence – Maya’s Story
Meet Maya, Hope’s client and front desk receptionist.
Before living independently, Maya used to be fearful of crossing the street by herself to attend the day program at Hope’s Whittier office.
Maya used to have a friend meet her at the intersection to make sure she made it safely across the street without falling, if she was to fall she felt she wouldn’t be able to get back up on her own.
After receiving supportive services and working at Hope, Maya confidently walks to the store by herself and even visits the farmers market in Campbell on the weekend. Maya also has served on the San Andreas Regional Center’s Board of Directors, and participates in advocating for others with disabilities.
Recently, Maya celebrated her 40th birthday with a trip to New York to visit her family and watched her favorite American Idol, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, perform live.
