Meet Phil and Shawn, the leadership team spearheading the next chapter of change and growth at HopeTHRIFT, beginning with our San Jose store. The two make a dynamic duo, combining their extensive and varied work experience to fashion the future of HopeTHRIFT.

Phil, Assistant Store Manager, came to HopeTHRIFT in November, new to store management after 20 years of car sales and entrepreneurship. He brings a renewed sense of passion and purpose, having found the work-life balance he’d been missing for years.

“My job provides me a living, the ability to serve my community, and quality time left over to spend with my family,” Phil shared. “This is the first time since 1991 I’ve had any sort of weekend off.”

Shawn, Retail District Manager, started his career in store and district management in 1992, working for the likes of FoodMaxx, CVS, Dollar Tree, Goodwill and Ross. After he was hired as a HopeTHRIFT Store Manager last year, he was then promoted to District Retail Manager, now overseeing all three HopeTHRIFT locations.

The San Jose store is staffed by a diverse range of people, including clients of Hope Services, student interns, rehabilitating workers, and volunteers. Shawn leads this crew by his foundational motto ‘esprit de corps,’ which means ‘team spirit.’

“Bringing each other up helps us collectively as a group,” Shawn said. “I want people to be successful and feel confident when they come to a job, to feel good about being at work.”

Among any challenges HopeTHRIFT faces day to day, keeping hope isn’t one of them. These two are constantly breaking the mold and thinking creatively about ways to sustain and expand HopeTHRIFT. Next time you’re shopping at our San Jose store, be sure to say hello!
