Austin Brings Joy and Inclusion to Chick-fil-A as a Dining Room Host

At Hope Services, we are committed to empowering individuals with developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential. Austin’s journey from Project SEARCH graduate to a valued employee at Chick-fil-A exemplifies the impact of our mission and the potential of inclusive hiring.

After graduating from Project SEARCH in June of last year, Austin had already secured employment with the fan-favorite food franchise: Chick-fil-A. As the first employment partnership between Hope and this particular business, it was a newly-opened door that has since expanded Hope’s footprint in the community.

Austin was thrilled to start his new role as the Dining Room Host on November 9th, 2023. In this position, he quickly became known for his warm welcomes, dedication to keeping the dining area spotless, and engaging interactions with guests. “I love everything about my job. I get to help on catering jobs for the 49ers, dress up in costumes sometimes, and go on field trips,” Austin shared.

The supportive environment at Chick-fil-A, bolstered by the guidance from Project SEARCH Job Coach Nancy Lui, played a crucial role in Austin’s success. “Nancy has been coaching Austin on how to handle when customers insist on tipping him for his outstanding service, as it goes against company policy,” said Zoraida Garcia, Project SEARCH Manager. This coaching helped Austin navigate his new role with confidence and professionalism.

Austin’s presence has contributed positively to the team culture at Chick-fil-A. Reyna, the Leader Intern, shared, “All of his coworkers enjoy having him on the team. Every day when he arrives, they greet him with a smile because he always brings a positive attitude.” Owner and Operator Will added, “On days when we face unforeseen challenges, he encourages and states that it will get better soon! We all love his sense of humor. Do not be fooled, he is a jokester!

The inclusivity modeled at Chick-fil-A has has even had a broader impact, touching the lives of customers. Reyna recounted a touching moment: “A guest approached me in the bathroom to express how much she loved the interaction between Austin and I. The guest noticed that I was on my break and Austin politely asked if he could join me. I gladly said yes, and he was ecstatic about it. It was heartwarming to see how our interactions positively affect our guests and contribute to the welcoming atmosphere here at Chick-fil-A First Street.”

Austin’s journey is a shining example of what can be achieved through support, inclusivity, and a positive attitude. “This Individual Placement is significant because the market is more challenging than ever, alongside a waitlist of individuals looking to receive support accessing employment opportunities,” said Blanca, Community Employment Coordinator at Hope Services. Austin’s story continues to inspire and bring hope to many, proving that with the right opportunities, everyone can shine.

Will shared, “As a Chinese immigrant growing up in Texas in the 1980s, I know firsthand what it is like to be excluded from potential life opportunities. We want our guests and team to feel that Chick-fil-A First Street is their ‘home away from home’!”
