New Hope Band | Ashley’s Story

Ashley and Netta’s bond goes far beyond their shared love of music—Netta is Ashley’s grandmother, and their deep familial connection is woven into every note they share. Together, they bring that spirit of family to the New Hope Band. More than just a musical group, the band is a vibrant community where individuals of all abilities come together, find connection, and celebrate one another’s successes.

In our community, we are lucky to have leaders like Netta, the president of the New Hope Band. This incredible group is made up of performers of all abilities, bound together by the power of music and a shared sense of purpose. But beyond the music, the story of the New Hope Band is deeply personal for Netta, whose life has been shaped by love, resilience, and the unbreakable bond she shares with her granddaughter, Ashley.

When Ashley was just three years old, Netta became her legal guardian. From that moment, Netta’s world changed in ways she could never have imagined. Ashley, diagnosed with both mild Intellectual Developmentally Delayed and Pervasive Developmentally Delayed-Not Otherwise Specified/Autism Spectrum Disorder. When Ashley became an adolescent, she was diagnosed with von Willebrand’s disease and severe environmental allergies which require around-the-clock specialized support and care. Despite the challenges, Netta has never wavered in her devotion to Ashley, and their journey together has been one of strength, perseverance, and incredible growth.

Ashley was one of the founding members of the New Hope Band when it was first established in 2008. In 2015, the band joined Hope Services. The 10 years with Hope Services has provided Ashley with Mental Health Services as well as a stable and safe sense of solace. The band has played an essential role in her life, providing an essence of community and belonging that has helped her overcome many of life’s obstacles. Through the band, Ashley has found a space where she can connect with others, express herself, and be part of something larger than herself. The band has not only given Ashley joy but has also helped her build confidence, develop skills, and knowledge that has been translated into other aspects of her life.

Ashley and her best friend, Jenni, plan to move into an apartment together and enjoy another phase of life. Hope Services has been there for Ashley providing her with a stable foundation to grow, transition, and explore adulthood.

Ashley’s work with the New Hope Band has had a significant impact on her personal and professional growth. As an administrative staff with Life Services Alternative, Ashley applies the skills she learns from her band experience – communication, teamwork, and responsibility – into her workdays. She has proven herself to be a valuable team member, always eager to help wherever she can. In fact, Ashley attends band practice an hour earlier than most, simply to set up the equipment for her fellow band members. Her dedication and commitment are a testament to her strong work ethic and love for the band.

The New Hope Band isn’t just a musical group – it’s a musical family. It’s a place where members of all abilities come together, find common ground, and celebrate each other’s successes. For Netta, the band represents a place where Ashley can shine, where she can feel seen, heard, and valued. It’s a place where the power of music and community bring healing and joy, not just to Ashley, but to all the band members, their families, and audiences.

As we continue to support the New Hope Band, we are reminded of the incredible impact that music and community can have on our lives. The band, under Netta’s leadership, has created a space where individuals like Ashley can thrive, develop their talents, and gain a sense of pride and accomplishment. It’s a place where differences are celebrated and where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and belong.
